Uncontrolled memories and thoughts

That uncomfortable feeling, the knot in your throat, the sinking in your chest that creates a tight barrier around the words you wish you could say… The ability to speak can temporarily shut down during high amounts of stress and exposure to a trauma.

Not only that, you’ve probably noticed that these experiences can sometimes continue to disrupt your life, long after the trauma or stressor has ended.

Symptoms associated with trauma, anxiety, and depression are frustrating and hard to explain to friends, family, and even mental health professionals. There is a very good reason that these instinctive responses happen to us!

Wired to respond quickly

Imagine! If you are faced with a serious threat or imminent danger, you want to respond quickly, so your instinct focuses all your energy on fighting for survival, running out of harm’s way, or freezing until the threat passes. But what do you do if your instincts constantly overreact to minimal threats?

Triggers that upset memories and result in intrusive thoughts are not always easy to identify. They can occur as a result of the cologne of a stranger or the sirens on a passing ambulance.

The strain of these thoughts and memories can make it a challenge to face another day. Sometimes, it simply isn’t worth the effort to get out of bed. Is there a solution?

Being in control

Art Therapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) may help provide that solution.

Eye movements, line drawing, and other forms of bilateral stimulation activate the stress reduction and problem-solving processes in our brain. This occurs while focusing on both the negative and positive emotions associated with a specific problem, memory, sensation, or belief.

We will help guide you through this process by providing an environment that is creative and safe. Together, we can reduce the intensity of these distressing experiences and identify the skills and techniques needed to boost your confidence, motivation, and well-being.
